*sigh* sad for me

Um... first of all, I know that last post was random... mostly, I was just trying to figure out how to post pictures. :)

And now for today's sadness: late this afternoon, I went to the post office to drop some things for work. Not an unusual errand, right? Lots of people go to the post office. They enter, do their thing, and exit... having accomplished what they set out to do, they go on their way and think nothing else of it.

Well! The people who were in this particular post office this afternoon went home with a story to tell... "Honey, you'll never guess what happened at the post office this afternoon! This girl came in with an armful of mail - a box, a bunch of envelopes - only she's barely inside the door when ... well, I don't really know what happened but it looked like she tripped, and almost fell over, but then caught herself, but then started to fall again, and dropped most of the mail! I wanted to laugh, but I was afraid she might be hurt... I don't know, she got up and seemed to be okay."

Fortunately, I managed to avoid injury (although my ankle and my wrist are a little sore), except for my pride.

On the other hand, maybe my klutziness caused a few people to laugh and thereby brightened their days?

It's My Dad's Fault!

We went to see "Prince Caspian" the other night... *sigh*. It wasn't what I was hoping for... the first one was SOOOO good (by which I mean close to the original story) that I just assumed this one would be the same. (Apparently, the old adages about not assuming still hold true.)

Okay, wait. It was a good movie. It just wasn't close to the book, which meant that Dave alternated between shushing the giggly girls behind us who just thought the boys in the movie were cute, and shushing me when the storyline blatantly disregarded the actual story! The thing is, I understand that anytime you turn a book into a movie, certain elements will need to be adapted. (Except, apparently, the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice... FABULOUS!!!) My problem is when you cut out pieces that were actually in the book so that you have room for made-up scenes!!!

I was telling a friend about my disappointment with the movie and she asked if I'd read the book (I had) and how recently. When I said I'd read it sometime within the last year or two, she said "Oh, that's why you didn't like it." ... because I'd read it so recently and remembered the story. She was right, I know the story too well, and that was the trouble with the movie. Unfortunately for me, even if I hadn't read the book in the last couple of years, I would still have known the story too well. The very first time I encountered the Chronicles is when I was little and my dad read a chapter to us every night at bedtime. Since then, I've read time and time again ... and will continue to do so. Maybe I should hold off on my next re-reading until after they make all the movies... but I just heard that "Voyage of the Dawn Treader" isn't due out till 2010, and there are still 4 books after that... so all signs point to me NOT waiting to re-read until the movies are done.

Bottom line: it's my dad's fault. If he hadn't read the stories to us, I wouldn't have fallen in love with them and continued to read them. Consequently, I wouldn't be disappointed when the movies strayed from the books.

Thank you, Dad. :)

Life's Little Luxuries

I've been thinking a lot about little things... sleeping in late on the weekend, just sitting quietly and drinking a cup of coffee in the mornings, reading a good book before bed... but it occurs to me, maybe they're not so much little luxuries as they are blessings! I've been very aware lately of how very blessed I am... and I am so grateful for it!

A year ago at this time, I had just finished my final project for my MA, we had just moved all the big stuff out of my apartment, into storage, and were preparing for another few days of intense packing and cleaning. After that was complete, then it was onto finish my final-final paper, participate in commencement, move into the new apartment, finish wedding preparations, get married, and find a job... *whew*!

Given that, you can see why I'm feeling so blessed by this year's quieter pace. Also am very grateful for the family and friends who have been such a blessing and an encouragement through everything ... the crazy and the quiet!

One final thought: Happy Family Reunion Day!!! (You know who you are.)

So not good at this...

Um... yeah. So... it's nine months now.

Needless to say, this has not been something I've approached with great discipline... or any discipline.

SO... bear with me while I try to do better!
